What state is Detroit in? Detroit is in Michigan. It is the largest city in the state, the seat of Wayne County, and it sits on the Detroit River directly across from Windsor, Ontario. Detroit is a city, not a state, even though people sometimes treat the name as shorthand for all of Southeast Michigan.

Is Detroit in Michigan? Is Detroit a state?
Yes, Detroit is in Michigan, and no, it is not a state. Detroit is a city in the southeastern corner of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. It is the state’s most populous city and the largest U.S. city on the border with Canada.
The confusion is understandable. “Detroit” often stands in for the whole region, the auto industry (“Detroit” as in the Big Three), or the city’s sports teams. On a map, though, it is one city inside one state.
Detroit is not Michigan’s capital, either. That is Lansing. Detroit did hold the title first: it was the capital of the Michigan Territory from 1805 and the first state capital after Michigan joined the Union on Jan. 26, 1837. The state’s 1835 Constitution kept the capital in Detroit only until 1847, and that year lawmakers chose Lansing Township as the permanent home, according to the Michigan State Capitol’s history of its three capitols.
The city itself is older than the state. French explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac founded Fort Detroit in 1701. Our explainer on who founded Detroit covers that story.
What county is Detroit in?
Detroit is in Wayne County, and it is the county seat, so county government offices are based in the city. Wayne County also includes suburbs such as Dearborn, Livonia, Westland, and Taylor.
Many places people call “Detroit” are in other counties. Royal Oak, Troy and Southfield are in Oakland County, and Warren and Sterling Heights are in Macomb County. They are part of Metro Detroit, but not the city.
One quirk surprises visitors: two separate cities sit almost entirely inside Detroit’s borders. Hamtramck and Highland Park became villages in the 1880s and 1890s and later incorporated as cities, resisting annexation while Detroit grew around them, as WDET has explained. Each has its own city government.
How many people live in Detroit?
About 649,000 people live in Detroit. The U.S. Census Bureau’s latest estimate puts the city at 649,095 residents as of July 1, 2025. The estimate was released in May 2026, and the City of Detroit noted that Detroit led every Michigan community in population growth that year.
That makes 2025 the third straight year of growth. That is notable because Detroit lost population every year from the 1950s until the 2020s. The 2020 Census counted 639,111 people, so the city has added roughly 10,000 residents since then.
Which number you need depends on the question:
- City of Detroit: about 649,000 (2025 estimate). This is the number for “how many people live in Detroit.”
- Metro Detroit (Detroit-Warren-Dearborn metro area): about 4.39 million (2025 estimate), covering six counties including Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb.
- State of Michigan: about 10.13 million (2025 estimate).
Annual estimates are revised each spring, so the figure for a past year can change slightly when the next release comes out. Always check the date attached to any population number you quote. For what the latest numbers say about crime, see Is Detroit safe?
What is Detroit’s area code? 313 and 679
Detroit’s area code is 313, and since late 2025 it also has a second one: 679. Area code 313 dates to 1947, when it was one of the original North American area codes. Today it covers Detroit and nearby Wayne County suburbs such as Dearborn, Dearborn Heights, Hamtramck, and Highland Park.
Because 313 was running out of numbers, Michigan added 679 as an overlay, meaning both codes cover the same area. Two changes came with it, according to the North American Numbering Plan Administrator:
- 10-digit dialing: Since Oct. 7, 2025, every local call in the 313 area must include the area code. Calls dialed with only seven digits will not go through.
- New 679 numbers: Starting Nov. 7, 2025, customers who request new service or an extra line may get a 679 number once 313 numbers are used up.
Existing 313 numbers did not change. If you set up alarm systems, speed dials, or fax machines years ago with seven-digit numbers, update them to 10 digits.
Area codes 248 and 947 serve most of Oakland County, and 586 serves most of Macomb County, so a “Detroit-area” phone number is not always 313.
Detroit ZIP codes
Detroit ZIP codes begin with 482, and most run from 48201 to 48244. Downtown Detroit is 48226. The city has dozens of standard ZIP codes plus P.O. Box and single-business codes used by large organizations.
Watch for one catch: the U.S. Postal Service’s “Detroit” mailing name does not match the city limits. Some ZIP codes with a Detroit mailing address cover suburbs, such as parts of Eastpointe, Ferndale, Oak Park, and the Grosse Pointes. A “Detroit, MI” address does not always mean the property is in the City of Detroit, which matters for taxes, schools, and city services.
How to check whether an address is in the City of Detroit
- Look up the ZIP code with the ZIP code tool on USPS.com. A 482 ZIP with the “Detroit” mailing name is a starting point, not proof.
- Check the municipality on the property tax bill, lease, or deed. It names the city or township the property actually belongs to.
- Confirm with the city using the City of Detroit’s property and parcel tools before you rely on it for city services, permits or school enrollment.
- For phone numbers, remember that 313 or 679 points to Detroit and nearby Wayne County, while 248, 947 and 586 point to Oakland and Macomb counties.
