Detroit City FC will open the 2026 USL Championship playoffs at home on Friday, Oct. 30, with an 8 p.m. ET kickoff at Keyworth Stadium in Hamtramck, the club announced. What it does not yet know is whom it will play, or from which seed.
That gets settled Saturday night in Louisville, Kentucky, where Detroit City closes the regular season against Louisville City FC at 7 p.m. ET. A win would lock up the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, according to the club. For fans, the stakes of the Detroit City FC playoffs are practical as well as competitive: every round is single elimination, so the Oct. 30 match could be the only postseason game at Keyworth this fall, or the first of several.
The berth is Detroit City’s fifth straight, WXYZ reported, and the club has reached the postseason in every one of its USL Championship seasons.

What is at stake Saturday in Louisville
Detroit City enters the finale at 14-7-8 with 50 points, level with the Charleston Battery for second place in the East, according to Louisville City’s match preview. Charleston hosts Indy Eleven in its own finale, so a Detroit win removes any doubt about second place.
Louisville has already clinched the No. 4 seed and, with 46 points, cannot catch Detroit City. That means Detroit will finish second or third and host either way. The Tampa Bay Rowdies have won the Players’ Shield, the regular-season title, which gives them home-field advantage throughout the playoffs, Louisville City noted.
The finale also carries some history. Detroit City knocked Louisville out of last season’s playoffs, a result Louisville’s own preview called one of the most significant in league history. The teams have met three times this year and scored three goals combined, according to Detroit City’s preview. The match streams on ESPN+.
How the 2026 USL Championship playoffs work
The top eight teams in each conference qualify for a single-elimination tournament, and the top four seeds host the conference quarterfinals, according to Louisville City’s playoff page. After the first round, the better seed hosts each match.
| Round | Dates |
|---|---|
| Eastern Conference quarterfinals | Oct. 30 (Detroit City hosts at 8 p.m. ET) |
| Conference semifinals | Nov. 6-8 |
| Conference finals | Nov. 13-15 |
| USL Championship Final | Nov. 20-22 |
Detroit City’s season by the numbers
- Record: 14-7-8, 50 points before the finale.
- Darren Smith: 14 league goals as of Oct. 10, tied for second in the USL Championship at the time, according to the club. His 56th-minute goal beat Rhode Island FC 1-0 and clinched a home playoff match.
- Carlos Herrera: tied for the league lead with 13 clean sheets. The goalkeeper returns Saturday after a one-game suspension for a red card against Rhode Island.
- Recent form: a 1-0 loss at Tampa Bay last weekend, the club said.
Thirteen clean sheets and two recent 1-0 results, one won and one lost, describe a team built on defense, a useful trait in a format where one goal can end a season.
