Veterans will not march through Corktown this November. The Detroit Veterans Day Parade, an annual event for two decades, has been canceled for 2026 because its Michigan Avenue route is unavailable during construction, according to the Detroit Veterans Day Parade Corp., the nonprofit that organizes it.
In its place, organizers are holding an indoor “Tribute to Michigan Veterans” on Sunday, Nov. 8, at the hall of IBEW Local 58 in Detroit, with doors opening at 9:30 a.m. That event is already full: the organizers’ website says registration is closed and seating is at capacity. For veterans, families and spectators who had planned to line the curb this weekend, that means there is no public parade to attend in the city this year.
Why the Detroit Veterans Day Parade was canceled
In a letter dated Aug. 26 to last year’s participants, parade manager Jerry Eden wrote that the Michigan Avenue route would be unavailable because of major construction scheduled during the parade. The committee proposed an alternative route and location on Woodward Avenue but had not received a response, the letter said, and without approval it would be very difficult to finish the planning in time.
The organizers did not describe the construction project in detail. They said they hope the parade will return in 2027, pending the timely completion of work on Michigan Avenue.
What replaces it: an indoor tribute on Nov. 8
The replacement event, which the organizers describe on the parade’s website as the 21st annual Detroit Veterans Day event, is a ceremony with guest speakers and a luncheon inside the IBEW Local 58 auditorium. The August letter said invitations would go first to 2025 participants and that an RSVP would be required because seating is limited.
As of Nov. 4, the site said registration was closed. Anyone without a confirmed seat should not plan to attend; questions go to the parade corporation, which lists Mr. Eden as its contact.
The 4Star 4 Mile race is off, too
The 4Star 4 Mile Race, a run and ruck that traditionally starts with the parade, has also been canceled for 2026, according to a notice from race directors on its RunSignup page. Runners who had already registered will be deferred automatically to the 2027 race, the notice said. Some older text on the page still lists a Nov. 8 start time; the cancellation banner is the current word.
Other ways to mark Veterans Day in Detroit
Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, Nov. 11. Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has proclaimed the day in Michigan, home to more than 486,000 veterans, according to the proclamation. A few other observances this week are confirmed for 2026:
- Michigan Military & Veterans Gala, Saturday, Nov. 7: 6 to 10 p.m. at Elevate at One Campus Martius, 16th floor, downtown. The sixth annual gala, presented by the National Guard Association of Michigan with the state’s Department of Military and Veterans Affairs and the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency, expects up to 375 veterans, service members and advocates, according to the agency. Registration is online; the listing does not post a price.
- Lost Mariners Remembrance, Nov. 7-10: The Dossin Great Lakes Museum on Belle Isle marks the anniversary of the Edmund Fitzgerald sinking with a free ceremony on Nov. 8 and free admission on Tuesday, Nov. 10. Details are in our Lost Mariners Remembrance guide.
- A quieter visit: Detroit’s museums, including the Detroit Historical Museum in Midtown, offer another way to spend the holiday; our guide to the best museums in Detroit lists hours and admission.
If you had set aside Sunday morning for the parade, the All Things Detroit Holiday market runs Nov. 8 at Eastern Market.
If you had planned to take part: a quick checklist
- Marchers and groups from 2025: check the tribute registration page or your RSVP confirmation before heading to IBEW Local 58 on Nov. 8.
- Runners registered for the 4Star 4 Mile: no action is needed for the deferral to 2027, according to race directors; use the RunSignup contact form with questions.
- Spectators: there is no public parade route to line this year, so plan on the gala, the Dossin events or a museum visit instead.
- Check back: organizers have said they hope the parade returns in 2027 once Michigan Avenue work is complete.
What the parade looked like last year
The 2025 parade, the 20th, stepped off in Corktown on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2025, after a ceremony at IBEW Local 58’s headquarters. Nearly 2,000 Metro Detroit veterans from all five branches took part, the Corktown Business Association reported. Even then the event was smaller than planned: WDIV-TV reported that a planned flyover from Selfridge and a U.S. Army band performance were pulled because of the federal government shutdown.
